The Canonization of Pier Giorgio Frassati

Pier Giorgio Frassati, TOSD (6 April 1901 – 4 July 1925) was an Italian Catholic activist and a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. He was dedicated to social justice issues and joined several charitable organizations, including the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, to better aid the poor and less fortunate living in his hometown of Turin.

Papal recognition

In 1989 John Paul II visited his tomb and paid honor to him calling him the "Man of the Eight Beatitudes". Pope Benedict XVI called upon adolescents in 2010 to follow the example of Frassati to "... discover that it is worth to commit oneself for God ... to respond to His call in the fundamental decisions" throughout one's life.

Pope Francis venerated Frassati's remains in November 2015 while visiting Turin.

Canonization

On 27 April 2024, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, announced during the 18th National Assembly of Italian Catholic Action that the canonization of Frassati had been cleared. His canonization date was slated for sometime in 2025, a jubilee year.[19] On 20 November 2024, it was announced that Frassati would be canonized during the Jubilee of Youth between 28 July to 3 August, with the canonization ceremonies set to occur on Sunday, 3 August. It was later announced by Pope Leo XIV that Frassati would be canonized on 7 September 2025, more than a century after his death, along with Blessed Carlo Acutis, whose canonization had been similarly postponed.

About

The Society in Verapoly

Since 1954

In 1934, Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Attipetty was appointed Archbishop of Verapoly, becoming the first indigenous bishop ordained in the Latin rite in India. Archbishop Attipetty recognized the need for organized charitable action and perceived the value of establishing the Society in Verapoly to address it effectively. With his blessings and active support, the first conference in Verapoly, known as the Ernakulam Conference, was established on 11 June 1935 at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral. Later, by the Society’s rules, it was renamed the St. Thomas Conference, Ernakulam. The translation of the Society’s rules into Malayalam was also undertaken under the patronage of Archbishop Attipetty in 1962.

By coordinating several conferences, the Varapuzha Central Council was established on 1 January 1954 and received its institution from the General Council International on 29 March 1959. It was the first Latin Rite Central Council in Kerala.

As of the 2024–2025 annual report, the Council has 158 conferences and 1,412 active members.
